New Hanover County Parks & Gardens is teaming up with the City of Wilmington Parks & Recreation for the City Nature Challenge!  The City Nature Challenge is a world-wide bioblitz to find and document as many species of wildlife and plants as possible over a four-day period from April 24-27.  The challenge involves taking pictures of nature and uploading them to the free iNaturalist app.  This activity can be done in your backyard, private property, or in the community while adhering to social distancing guidelines.

The City Nature Challenge provides a unique opportunity to:

  • Encourage people to enjoy time outdoors while maintaining social distance
  • Help the public learn about native plants and animals with just a smartphone
  • Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day
  • Contribute to a growing body of citizen science data
  • Better understand the biodiversity in our own backyards!

iNaturalist is an app that allows people throughout the world to document & share nature observations. The app also provides identification assistance and allows you to maintain a list of all your observations.
