Careful observations by naturalists contribute so much to our understanding of the natural world.  Those observations are most classically documented through imagery and art.  Examples of these can be seen from Charles Darwin to John James Audubon, but one of the greatest illustrators for the study of insects is Maria Sibylla Merian.
